Spring 1 2025

Frozen Kingdom

This term, we have been exploring the Frozen Kingdoms of the world by learning about the North and South Pole.  We have located them on the world map and learnt about the climate, the landscape as well as about the animals and people that live there!  We have had so many questions, and have been fascinated by the amazing landscape and its beauty.

In literacy, we have continued with our topic and been utilising film to fire our imagination.  We have loved using the short film Tuurngait - https://vimeo.com/114876998 to explore film and inspire our writing.  Also, we have developed our understanding of descriptive language to create images.  We have written amazing poems entitled 'I want to be an explorer...' - the imaginary and figurative language used has been outstanding!  Really proud of the efforts made - check out a few of the poems below!

I want to be an explorer!

I want to be an explorer,

To watch the Northern lights painting the sky with an enchanting smile,

Feel the frozen sea crashing on the rocks as it soothes my soul,

Listen to the wondrous wolf, howling in the dead of night,

Observe the playful polar bears dancing in the snow like a restless beast,

Taste the salty ocean breeze brewing a haze over the starlight moon.

I want to be an explorer,

To see the crackling, crystal cliffs stand over the shimmering snowfield,

Feel my frost bitten fingers attacked by the biting bitter breeze,

Taste the shimmering sculpted snowflake dissolve on my tongue,

Watch the Arctic sun peaking over the horizon,

Smell the raw fish sizzling on the ferocious fire roaring like a brave lion.

I want to be an explorer,

To observe an avalanche howling in fury like thunder beneath my feet,

Feel a bitter crisp shiver like a ghost in the night,

Watch the moon cast a dream-like spell on the silver speckled sky,

Scrutinise the frozen sea, a dragon resting under a blanket of ice,

Listen to a sneaky snow fox feast on its unlucky prey.

I want to be an explorer!

I want to be an explorer

I want to be an explorer,

To see the Northern lights shimmer in the luminously inky, black sky,

Feel the silvery snowflakes slip off my hands,

Smell the salty sea air tickling the ends of my nostrils,

Savour not only the fish caught fresh that morning but the moment,

Hear the waves slamming themselves into the rocky border of the mountain.

I want to be an explorer,

To navigate through the colossal mountains towering over the bitter aquatic sea,

Listen out for the thunderous, rough call of the majestic polar bears,

Handle the scoldingly cold ice cubes as they freeze up my hand,

Pick up the crowd of snowflakes as they slip and tumble down the mountains,

Sample the crisp ice hovering over the end of my tongue.

I want to be an explorer,

To catch sight of the translucent jellyfish, bobbing over roaring waves,

Grasp the oozing seaweed shooting around in my hand,

Taste the rain as it lands on my tongue with a sploosh,

Sniff the scent of fish freshly caught by the polar bears,

Listen to the penguins chirping over the icy horizon.

I want to be an explorer!

I want to be an explorer!

I want to be an explorer,

To observe the frozen sea holding its breath,

Watch shimmering silky snowflakes fall peacefully from the sky,

Listen to the birds singing a mystical melody,

Spot majestic enchanting stars at twilight as they float around beautifully,

Feel our feet sinking softly into the snow silently.

I want to be an explorer,

To navigate through the fierce frosty forests knowledgeably,

Watch the sun set amazingly as it shows us the wondrous, remarkable colours,

Listen to the magical trees moving as the wind whistles gracefully,

Feel the air blow as the frosty snowflakes fall,

Spot the winter’s cold ice crumble beneath our feet.

I want to be an explorer,

To travel across the adventurous, resourceful snow biome,

Watch the mystical Northern Lights beam across the winter sky,

Listen to the polar bears playing passionately,

Spot the graceful Arctic foxes hunting for its prey,

Feel the touch of the hollowing inside of the mysterious trees.

I want to be an explorer!

We have also immersed ourselves in the life of being an explorer in preparation for our new literature text - Race to the Frozen North.  We set up base camp, organised a fitness regime to ensure we are physically fit to survive the adventure and designed our base camp flag!

As part of our topic, we have also been learning about the Titanic!  We have learnt all about the 'unsinkable' ship and what happened that tragic day!  We have also been thinking and learning about the science behind how a boat floats and been helping Cockle Picker Hari to design and make a boat to carry the most cockles.  We designed and made lots of boats to test and found the perfect boat shape in order for Cockle Picker Hari to make the most profit!  We have also been news reporters and analysed news reports from the tragic event - so many newspapers reported the wrong story!  So we set about finding out the facts and created our very own news report - Newsround style!  We needed to stay in role, use a loud, clear and suitably expressive voice, and use formal language to share the news with our audience.  Have a read of a few examples below.

Good morning, I am Jackson Ohri and I am here at the docks in Southampton where a sea of families have been left in tears.  News just in is that the famous "unsinkable" ship – the Titanic - has sunk in the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Titanic left these very docks just 4 days ago where the surrounding area was filled with happy faces and excitement in the air.  But now, broken, hopeless families have been left sick to the heart with the news coming in. Reports so far tell us that the mighty Titanic hit an iceberg which scraped a hole in the side of the ship causing water to flood in.  More than 2000 people were on board - some have been rescued but many are feared to have been lost.

Families, here in Southampton, are patiently waiting in tears for the news of their loved ones. The Titanic was suppose to be the unsinkable ship but now it is at the bottom of the ocean – what has gone wrong?

As more news arrives, we will keep updating you but for now this is Jackson Ohri signing out!

Greetings.  This is Jacob Bailey with your 12 o'clock news reporting from Southampton docks.  Yesterday news reached us that the unthinkable has happened!   The world's largest and most luxurious ship has perished.  The remarkable and mighty R.M.S Titanic has sunk after hitting an iceberg.

The ship departed from here only 4 days ago. It has been reported that 5 of the 8 watertight compartments were flooded with water causing the ship to sink.  The water in the North Atlantic is currently only –2 degrees and therefore, people who have entered the water would have struggled to survive for more than 15 minutes before freezing in the icy waters.  Many people have gathered here to wait for news of their loved ones.

Over 2000 passengers were on board.  However, reports in suggest that there were not enough lifeboats to save all the passengers should disaster strike.  Survivors, who made it to lifeboats, have been rescued by the R.M.S Carpathia but we are yet to find out who the survivors are.

That’s all on the 12 o'clock news.  We will bring more news as we receive it.  This is Jacob Bailey signing out!
