Autumn 2024 1

Numeracy

We’ve been very busy in our Maths lessons so far this term. We have learnt about place value, negative numbers, using greater than, less than or equal to signs as well as rounding. We’ve just started to work on our addition and subtraction skills. We’re using the column method to help us add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers.

Literacy

We’ve been working on explanation writing in our Literacy lessons. We’ve looked at lots of different texts and tried to identify the features of explanation writing. We’ve learnt how and when to add brackets to sentences and how to extend sentences using because. We brought all our skills together to write our own explanation about the water cycle. We’ve also been learning how to construct sentences, the correct spelling of different homophones and how to add suffixes to words.

Topic

We are fully immersed in our topic, On Our Doorstep. We began the term with a trip to the Wetlands Centre. There, we learnt all about plastic pollution and how it impacts on wildlife and our local environment. We’ve carried out fieldwork in Penclawdd conducted litter, business and house surveys. We used the information to find out more about our local area. We’ve also learnt about rivers and how they change from their source to their mouth. We brought our literacy work into our topic and recreated a water cycle using a bag and some blue water.

Mental Health Awareness

In October, we took part in World Mental Health Day. We all enjoyed sharing a breakfast and talking to our friends.

Black History Month

For Black History Month, we learnt about Mark Brown, the first black Welsh rugby player. We created fact files to show all the information that we found out about him.
