Helping your child at home
Reading
Oxford Reading Tree
When children have a good grasp of blending through phonics, we move children onto reading books. Some children will follow the reading books that are part of our Phonics programme. Some children quickly move onto Oxford Reading Tree books where children soon to learn to enjoy reading stories with favourite characters of Biff, Chip and Kipper.
Please can you ensure your child’s reading book and reading diary are returned to school as agreed by your class teacher. Comments recorded in your child’s reading diary are important and help us to support you with helping your child’s reading development at home as well as in school. We hear children read throughout the course of each week, either as part of a supported reading group or individually.
We use Oxford Owl online, which has a wonderful selection of online books Oxford Owl free resources (which are limited. As we subscribe , the class teacher will provide you with your Oxford Owl class login where you can access the full range of books.

What is Talk for Writing? Pie Corbett explains
Talk for Writing founder and Literacy expert, Pie Corbett, gives a brief overview of the Talk for Writing approach to teaching Literacy, and why it works.
Talk for Writing was developed by the author Pie Corbett. It is a fun, creative yet also rigorous approach to develop writers.
Talk for Writing starts with enjoying and sharing stories. Through regular reading, we want children to build up an extensive and rich vocabulary for use in their own writing.
During the initial ‘imitation’ stage of Talk for Writing, children learn to tell a story off by heart. They retell a text with expression and actions and make use of a story map to support their retelling. Once the story is learnt, children are encouraged to adapt it. At the ‘innovation’ stage, children make the story their own, for example, by changing the character or setting. Finally, at the ‘invention stage, children write their own text independently.
